SHORT POEM
ALONE WITH HERSELF
Short Poem by Robert Buckley

She sits in the back room
alone with herself
in a world of her own.
Adept in her own way
she repairs a ripped seam
for a child long since grown.
A subtle smile fractures
the life-sharpened focus,
disturbs concentration.
Thoughts of repairs
in a much simpler time
break her meditation.
Sun splashes her face,
machine rattles and whirrs,
now the split is no more.
Recollections return
of a heart-warming turn,
there, provoked by the chore.
On a yesteryear day,
of a mother-soft laugh
and summer-sweet joy.
The repair of a dress
for the first flush of love
and the kiss of a boy.
She sighs and continues,
heart lighter this time,
bent over her Singer.
The frenetic standstill
of the times we are in
though old days still linger.
Robert started his poetry journey in 2023 at the tender age of 56, realising it was an exploration of what it means to be him. He decided that, if he had to live in his own head, he should be familiar with the voices in there. He writes simply because he must. He thinks he’ll probably always be a novice trying to find his place in the field (Insert “Next to the cow” joke here)
Robert has been published by Middle West Press, The Haiku Shack Magazine, Tiny Wren Lit and The Zest Of The Lemon. A former USNR Seabee, voice actor, working-class aspiring novelist (yup, he is still working on his first novel) and proud Celt, he often feels out of his depth in this writing game.
He lives with his family in Ireland.
