FROM THE DEPTHS OF MY THOUGHTS

The Morning Star

The man with glowing eyes and a charming grin asks
What is your deepest desire?

I don’t know
I have so many desires
and I don’t know which is the deepest

Well, he says
Just pick one. I haven’t got all day

I think a moment
I can’t, I say
I keep changing my mind

I’d like to be young again
but I’d just make the same mistakes
differently

I’d like to turn back time
but I’d have no more control over it
than I did the first time

Everything I think I desire
when I really think about it
I realize I don’t want it after all

Now I see
why he asks the question
and I’m glad I can’t answer it

You only want
what you can’t have, he says, smiling

That’s why you invent supernatural beings
he says, as he fades away

the expanding universe

you were all the world to me
but on this voyage
through time and space
climates change
suns cool
or explode
and worlds collide
or wander into the grip of a dark star

our paths cross different orbits
and as we recede ever faster
into the void
the light fades
and an instant
becomes all eternity

THE MOSQUITO

On a cool June evening
I’m lying in bed
and instinctively go to swat
a mosquito
buzzing around my head

but I stop
when I realize
I’m grateful
that somebody
still finds me attractive
