Lit eZine Vol 8 | p-6 | POETRY | A Future Returning

SHORT POEM

A FUTURE RETURNING
by Paul R. Bender

A woman staring into the desert sunrise
AI-generated Image
Driving, driving
Through the desert
On the trail of trinities
Radiating in the distance
North-west on 95, from
Vegas, like a beacon from the past

A sunrise on earth, the fission blast
They build a town in the desert
Mannequin families resting
Dad, his martini glass

Then the blast, mom her sun-dress
Eyes filled with tears of sand
Staring towards the future

Crystals forming below her feet
Her future, my history
A future returning?

Paul R. Bender was born and raised in Kitchener,
Ontario, Canada, among the rolling hills, south of the old order Mennonite farms of Waterloo Region. He currently resides in Hespeler, now part of Cambridge, Ontario, with his wife of twenty years and son.
Paul spends most of his time paddling his canoe along the eddies or bends on the Speed River at the face of his home, or hours pecking letters to words while dreaming of wilderness trips with his wife.
