SHORT POEM
MY NEW NOSE
by V. Bray

I got my witch’s nose at 50.
Destiny struck and fractured it
during the pandemic
when I was isolated and alone
and unable to go to the ER.
After two weeks,
nobody knew that all hope was lost.
The bump remains a reminder
of my grandmother
from the ancient fir forests:
escaping a war,
forced to travel light
leaving her mother,
father and sister behind
a linger iron curtain.
I feel the weight of her obligation
to live along each edge and line
of my new profile.
I try not to run from my shadow,
knowing I will grow
into my new nose.
