SHORT POEM
UNTIL MORNING
by Lolo Curran

You met me
That one day
And told me everything
It was as if
A bluebird was trapped
On the inside
Of a small and crowded shop
You kept flying
Into the ceiling
Over, and over, and over again
I was laughing
And twirling around
I wanted to hold the door open
For you
Instead, I drew the blinds
And bathed you
In the afternoon shade
Listening to your songs
I can recall that moment
You screamed
Forever!
And jumped up and down
In your wet linen shirt
I have just come to realize
That forever is two words
And ever is a very long time
It is long enough
To keep me running
As the days chase me
Catching me
And throwing me, harshly
Back into my life
My life, this dream
In which I am
But a subtle visitor
I take your arm
And walk
Down its vast hallways
Sometimes, when I wake
I am wet, and forgotten
But I love you
And I miss your name
I see you
Anchored to the saddened buoy
There is no chain
And you drift with the tide
You guide us
Through the wide channel
Birthing us
And as before, I love you
White clouds form
The shape of hands
And they help us
Squeeze tightly
Only to become, more comfortable
You run through the sand
In your bare feet
I have never seen such quickness
A departure
Into the oranges and the yellows
I am all that is left
And you have taken with you
The world
But I dream
It is the never to be
And what never was
It is for ever.
Lolo Curran is a poet from the Four Corners region, specifically the Southwestern parts of Colorado. His work has been featured in the Poetry Foundation’s annual publication, and he has delivered presentations at the University of Colorado, Boulder. After a decade long tenure serving as an infantryman in the United States Marine Corps, something happened. His mind and heart shifted. The diverse and complex people who inhabit this planet transformed his soul. He embarked on a never-ending search, contemplating himself, others, the land, and the mind. Through his written word, he vividly and beautifully conveys his discoveries. Lolo enjoys exploring mountains, canyons, oceans, rivers, and occasionally cities, too. When you read his work, pause for a moment. Close your eyes. Feel your heartbeat. Imagine. Go slowly forward, and consider it all.
