SHORT POEM

THE MILKMAN COMETH
by William J. Barker

In the morning, the Milkman cometh
Wrapped in his white suit and noiseless van.
Their husbands embark for work and
He waves to each with his one free hand.

He tramples all over the emerald yards.
He dumps his wares at the yellow door.
A trail of bathrobes up the stairs.
In a trice, he breaches the second floor.

We watched them on the red Queen-Bed
From behind the bars of our cot.
His teeth around her swollen breast.
“Milk. We want milk. Not rot.”

William Barker writes short stories, poetry, scripts, film criticism and other nonfiction under the penname William J. Barker for his blogs every week and for submission to publications. His work has been published in Areo, The Hilarian, and Pinnacle. He is working on his debut novel and studying creative writing and law at the University of Adelaide in South Australia. A Romantic Realist, he’s interested in telling stories that show life as more exciting than it is but make them as real as everyday life. He writes about the clashes between the heroes and villains we all could be, and should or shouldn’t be, and he doesn’t care if they’re cowboys, detectives, or aliens. He intends to one day be a full-time novelist, playwright, and short story writer but hopes to have at least one published work in every medium.
