ANXIETY IN FIVE ACTS

I

Cuckoo thoughts
nest in my head,

hurling the egg
of a promising idea
to the unforgiving ground

where it f r a g m e n t s,

unrealised
and unheard

II

You wince
at a memory
then bury it —
at what cost?

it claws the earth
beneath your feet,
feet that can
no more skip
jaunty than walk
to the moon,
knowing
you can't bury
something
like that...

undead,
the memory
shakes its bones
prepares
to surface,
again
and again

III

same ol’ table,
different routes —
board lights up;
take aim,
then shoot

life, a
once-only pinball
shot
flip like crazy
only one
you've got

bumpers prang
you're on a high
the buzz,
the lights
a chance to fly

whatever score
you rack up
it ends for us all
in the
gutter shot

IV

long after
the fire,
phoenix skies
breathe brilliant blue
above the scorched earth

ash-covered,
newly fertile ground
gives life

another chance

V

fret not
those lost
golden hours

forget not
that it's
within your power

to spin
new stories
of golden hue

to win
cherishable moments
in all you're yet to do

fret not
for what's
passed

look forward
make more memories
that will last

the time is now

Stur Poet is a full-time English teacher and a part-time poet. He lives with his wife, two children and a faithful hound, Pip, in rural Dorset. When not writing, reading or out walking the dog, Stur Poet indulges in his passion for sports, which he watches or plays whenever he gets a chance. One day he hopes to publish a poetry collection, although he acknowledges that this is more of a hopeful aspiration than a firm expectation.
