Word Facts- What are Sniglets?

What are Sniglets?

A Google font? Yes, that too. But that is not what we are talking about here.

A sniglet is any word coined for something that has no specific word or name. It is often thought of as a word that should be in a dictionary but isn’t.

According to Jack Smith in Los Angeles Times, Richard Hall first introduced sniglets on the HBO television program called “Not Necessarily the News,” and his book “Sniglets” (Collier Books, Macmillan) is a collection not only of his own sniglets but of many sent in by viewers.

Here are a few of them coined by Richard Hall—

Elbonics. n. The actions of two people maneuvering for one armrest in a movie theater.

Expressholes. n. People who try to sneak more than the “eight items or less” into the express checkout line.

Napjerk. n. The sudden convulsion of the body just as one is about to doze off.

Creating words is fun! A long while ago, I wrote a post where I created some new words, or sniglets as we will call them now, and so did some of my friends. If words are your thing, Let’s have an ‘AHA MOMENT’- Build A New Word is something you should read.

If you too have fallen for these very expressive words, here is a collection of sniglets that I found while wandering the internet. I am sure you will enjoy this.

Aren’t sniglets fun? I think we all come up with them at one point or another when the language we speak doesn’t suffice. What are yours? You can always coin one now, even if you have never done so in the past. Tell me in the comments.

Use a sniglet you made up in your own work. Post the link in the comments.
